The Aylsham Agricultural Show Association has awarded the Norfolk Hero Food and Drink Championship 2014 to the Saracen’s Head in Wolterton and the President’s Individual Hero Award has been given to Nicola and Matthew Colchester of the Colchester Inns.

The Saracen’s Head has beaten stiff competition from Winbirri Vineyards, H. V. Graves of Briston and the Norfolk Mead Hotel. Back in June, the Georgian inn had an excellent review when it won the ‘Best Use of Norfolk Produce on the Menu’ and has now secured the highest accolade which is sponsored by Larking Gowen.

The Colchester Inns are award winning pubs in Norfolk serving home cooked food, owned and managed by the Colchester family and their team. The pubs, which include Aylsham’s Black Boys Hotel, Horstead’s Recruiting Sergeant, South Walsham’s The Ship Inn and The Buckinghamshire Arms near Blickling Hall, are all well-known to local people and further afield.

“I’m honoured to give the Individual Hero Award to Nicola and Matthew Colchester. They have a passion for hosting and giving their customers truly delicious food. The family has a real knack in creating pubs into a destination experience for quality food and ambiance,” said Aylsham Show President Phillida Hurn.

Aylsham Show’s Hero Awards Chairman, Jacinth Rogers, said: “The Saracen’s Head has proven that it’s a true champion with its enthusiasm for local food. The judges summed it up beautifully saying that it’s ‘a delight to visit’ and it’s the ‘ultimate Norfolk experience – simply marvellous’.

AYLSHAM SHOW AWARDS COUNTY’S FOOD AND DRINK HEROES

The Aylsham Agricultural Show Association announces the winners of the Norfolk Hero Food and Drink Awards 2014, which include a vineyard, butchers, an inn and a hotel.

The four lucky winners have been selected from many nominations as voted by Norfolk people in recent months. Earlier in June, a team of judges visited a shortlist of nominees who all showed off their passion for quality food or drinks. After detailed assessments the following four have been awarded the well-respected hero accolade:

Winbirri Vineyard, Surlingham, is the county’s ‘Best Specialist Food or Drink Producer’ which is sponsored by Gressingham Foods. The judges praised the business for its ‘good local involvement’ and its ‘really good product’. They also said that the team is ‘very enthusiastic and knowledgeable’ and it has a ‘really different Norfolk product’.

Herbert Graves Ltd. in Briston, a butcher, bakery and local shop, is awarded ‘Best Food or Drink Supplier Promoting Local Produce’. This category is sponsored by Dewing Grain. The judges reported that it is an ‘excellent family-run business’ and ‘very impressive’. Judges also highlighted its friendly and knowledgeable staff; the enormous range of local produce, its 5-star hygiene rating and that every area has a family member involved.

The Saracen’s Head, Wolterton, has secured the award for ‘Best Use of Norfolk Produce on the Menu’ which is sponsored by PIC UK. It has an excellent review from the judges stating that the inn has ‘fantastic enthusiasm for local food which is absolutely second to none’. The judges also said that it is ‘very rare to see a head chef doing his own butchering’. They reported that the business is ‘very focused on training and enthusing its staff ’ and highlighted that it was a ‘delight to visit and it is the ‘ultimate Norfolk experience – simply marvellous’.

The Best New Food or Drink Venture started in 2013/ 14, sponsored by BOCM Pauls, is the Norfolk Mead Hotel in Coltishall. Judges said that it has ‘first rate food with great attention to detail’. They were impressed with the speedy refurbishment and how it has been upgraded by the new owners. It also praised its wonderfully equipped kitchens and said it is ‘well worth a visit’.

Aylsham Show’s Hero Awards Chairman, Jacinth Rogers, said: “They are all excellent winners and truly wonderful Norfolk businesses. We all have many reasons to visit each of them and enjoy what they produce or serve.”LG-CA-logo-pantone

Tony Bambridge – President’s comments 2015

TonyBambridge006Come and get a taste of the North Norfolk rural way of life at the 2015 Aylsham Show. Whether it is the farm yard animals, horses, tractors old and new or just the crafts which are associated with our rural county they will all be on offer at the show on August bank holiday Monday, so come along and enjoy this county at its best. I am proud to be President of the show and work with the many volunteers who each year put the event on to show case all that is great and good about farming, food and rural matters. Each one provides a small piece of the giant jigsaw that culminates in the show, a great picture for you to enjoy. And because of all that hard work which has already been ongoing since last year we hope to raise money for local charities, helping those who need that little extra helping hand in the communities we all live and work in. Over the last twenty odd years it has been a privilege to be part of that community and help with staging the show and taking part in all the events surrounding the show and Aylsham Agricultural Show Association. You do not need to be a farmer or involved in the agricultural industry to take part and be part of the association, anyone can become a member and enjoy being part of that community and the privileges membership will bring you on show day. And it all takes part in the Park to Blickling Hall, probably one of the most picturesque show venues in the country. We are really thankful to the National Trust for allowing us the venue. So put Monday August 31st 2015 in your diary now and come join me for one of the best days out and enjoy the sights, sounds and flavours of rural North Norfolk you are all welcome. See you there Tony Bambridge.
