The Aylsham Agricultural Show Association announces the winners of the Norfolk Hero Food and Drink Awards 2015, which are recognised as impressive and innovative.
Norfolk Hero Food and Drinks Awards’ judges visited the shortlist of nominated establishments and their teams in June and have awarded five winners for four categories this year. They believe that ‘Norfolk has some of the most innovative small businesses in the UK’.
Joint winners for category ‘Best New Food or Drink Venture started in 2014/ 15’ (sponsored by For Farmers) are The Dial House in Reepham and King’s Arms Coaching Inn in Swaffham. The Dial House was praised for its ‘great enthusiasm, emphasis on local food and developing staff and trainees in-house’.
Judges were equally struck by The King’s Arms Coaching Inn staff’s ‘great fervour and also its impressive bar area and courtyard’. They also welcomed the use of local meat, which is from Papworths.
The award for ‘Best Food or Drink Supplier, promoting local produce’ (sponsored by Dewing Grain) is picked up by Arthur Howell, a butcher in Wells-next-the-Sea. The ‘professionalism and enthusiasm of the proprietor and staff are evident’, said the judges. The report also highlighted the extent of the business: ‘They specialise in the supply of top quality meat, run a bakery and fish shop while supporting local schools and the community’.
The ‘Best Specialist Food or Drink Producer’ award (sponsored by Gressingham Foods) goes to Norfolk Brewhouse in Hindringham. Judges considered that the brewer has ‘great passion, a high quality product, attention to detail in all elements of the operation and it uses 100% Norfolk barley’.
The Anchor Inn in Morston won the award for ‘Best Use of Norfolk Produce on the Menu’ (sponsored by PIC UK). The Inn’s team is ‘very enthusiastic about its food and the set up’. The judges were impressed that ‘a lot of time is spent with local suppliers and finding Norfolk produce’.
Aylsham Show’s Norfolk Hero Food and Drink Awards Committee Chairman, Jacinth Rogers, said: “It’s been a very exciting year with many nominations. We have wonderful and quality winners, which are established businesses and also new ones. They have a great offer and also contribute to their community, tourism and economy. A fantastic result all together!”
The Overall Championship is sponsored by Larking Gowen Chartered Accountants, and the Category Winners were judged by Steven Rudd from the Sponsors and Jimmy and Pauline Butler from Blythburgh Free Range Pork. The Winner will be announced on Show Day (31st August 2015) and will be presented with the Ken Dye Memorial Salver. The Show President – Tony Bambridge – will announce the winner of the Individual Food or Drink Hero and will present the President’s Cup.
